Starting a major new project is like those first few seconds of a rollercoaster ride–that final countdown when you’re being oh-so-slowly carried to the top of the first peak. Your heart is racing with adrenaline and excitement, accompanied by a healthy case of butterflies in your stomach. Then, all the sudden, you go over the brink and take the initial plunge. Well, for One Twenty Seven, this post is us taking that initial plunge.
One Twenty Seven is a project inspired by the charge issued in James 1: 27: “Religion that is pure and undefined before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
As college students, it can be easy to get caught up in the craziness of our daily lives (for instance, I’m sitting here writing this on an iPad right now because my computer and some coffee had an unfortunate encounter last week). Life gets hectic and throws us unexpected curveballs. It can be easy to allow the issues of our own lives to become excuses and distractions. After all, it is one thing to say that we are all for caring for the orphans and widows; it is another to actually be the ones diving in and doing the work. It is especially challenging when we do not even know where our service should begin. That is where One Twenty Seven comes in.
One Twenty Seven’s intent is to be a beginning point, an information hub, and a foundational resource for those who want to take an active role in fulfilling James’ call to hands-on care. If you want information on what is happening in orphan and widow care in the nonprofit world, then One Twenty Seven is for you. If you are looking for personal reflections and anecdotes, then, well, One Twenty Seven is also for you. If you are looking for stepping stones and connections that will enable you to take action, then this is still your place.
Our team of writers comes from a variety of backgrounds and have a variety of divergent career and personal interests. However, what we all share in common is a deeply-held faith in Jesus Christ and a desire to make a difference in our generation and the world.
This is a journey for all of us, and we are excited to see where it goes. We would love for you to walk with us, as we seek to explore what it means to love and serve orphans and widows with the mind of Christ!
With His Hope,
